I was surprised to find that many jobs (up to 25%) are filled through networking. I will have to see if I can find where the source is for the comment in the link below. It wouldn't surprise me if the number is higher in certain areas (like the Bay Area where I work; the bulk of our positions appear to be filled by recommendations from within the company).

I would say that 30-40% of our new hires are a referral from a current employee.
Sometimes we cringe though. Just because the person working for the company is good, doesn't mean their friends will be and sometimes manager's hire them anyway.

I tend to be really selective about who I recommend for a position within a company. It is, after all, a reflection on me if the person doesn't do well. Most of the referrals I made at PayPal, luckily, turned out pretty well:)

I try to be cautious as well. Not that we are going to fire someone because their friend was a bad worker, but we definatly aren't going to let them live it down. :)
