Generally speaking, many employers use discipline before terminating employees. If you have been disciplined, here are ten suggested rules for surviving disciplinary action.

1. Do not make it a struggle over who is boss.
2. Demonstrate your willingness to comply.
3. Consider using a coach to ensure that you are not acting disrespectfully.
4. Do not act in anger if you are given additional disciplinary action(s).
5. Respectfully clarify what is expected.
6. Do not keep asking, "How am I doing?"
7. Do not insist that your boss keep scheduled one-on-one meetings.
8. Clarify vague instructions, and document your performance and any requests for help.
9. Never ask, "Am I going to be fired?"
10. Use the three contact rule to put closure on the crisis period.
